Why Pretreatment
Most of crude oils and fats contain impurities that must be removed before they can
be used for oleochemical processes.

A good pretreatment process will ensure that good quality oleochemical products can be produced consistently and reduce process losses.

Type of Impurltles
Impurities in crude oils and fats that will affect the yield and quality of oleochemical products:
• Gums
• Solid particles
• Trace metal

Pretreatment Process
A pretreatment process is required to remove the unwanted impurities.

LIPICO Pretreatment process consists of:
• Degumming
• Adsorption

a) Degumming
In the degumming section, phosphoric acid or citric acid is used to remove the nonhydratable gums and trace metals in oil by converting them into non-soluble complexes.

b) Adsorption
Adsorption clay (commonly known as bleaching earth) or silica is used to adsorb the insoluble precipitates formed in the degumming reaction. The used clay will be filtered out using pressure leaf filters.
