Traditionally, a neutralization plant is either designed for high reaction temperature (~90°C) and short retention time (commonly referred to as ‘Long-Mix’); or lower reaction temperature (40~60°C) with longer retention time (commonly called ‘Short-Mix’).

LIPICO offers a standard neutralization with flexibility of variable reaction temperature and retention time. With this convenience, the operating condition can be adjusted to suit process requirement.

Process Description

The crude oil is heated to degumming temperature and mixed intensively with phosphoric acid in a dynamic high shear mixer, then undergoes degumming reaction in a degumming tank. The mixture is next cooled to neutralization temperature and mixed with caustic then fed to a reaction tank with variable retention time for neutralization reaction. A separator is then used to separate the soapstock from the oil.

The neutralized oil is washed with hot water to remove residual soap. Citric acid may be added to the oil during washing to enhance soap removal.

A vacuum dryer is used after washing to remove the residual moisture. In cases where the crude oil may contain residual solvent, the vacuum dryer can be designed to remove the solvent as well.
